On the other hand, his characterization of service requirements of diaphragm pumps may apply to some models, but clearly not all. Diaphragm vacuum pumps have been widely adopted for use as forepumps for turbomolecular pumps in GCMS instruments. When equipped with variable speed motors, models of diaphragm pumps have been shown to operate reliably and efficiently for over 4 years in continuous duty without service – comparable to the service interval of the turbomolecular pump it supports. Depending on the diaphragm pump model, service can also be quick, and accomplished with a few simple tools. This service profile may not be available for every diaphragm vacuum pump, but an appropriate diaphragm pump used as a forepump has a service profile considerably better than the complex annual rebuild cited in the article.
